Southby Southwest Wrap Up: So Long, and Thanks for All the BBQ

Posted by Tom C., Verisign

Even though I regularly complain about having to go on business trips, Southby Southwest (SxSW) was an amazing event and I’m glad I got to experience it. There’s almost too much to recount about our great .tv trip, so forgive me if I leave anything out.

First: Austin is a great place, but I’m sure it’s a little bit nicer without the extra 25,000 people who attended SxSW this year. I wasn’t expecting the impact that the crowds would have on getting taxis (forget about getting one) or attending sessions. Like a lot of people, there were a few sessions I couldn’t attend as they simply weren’t letting us in.

Tip for next year: book early so you can get a closer hotel and avoid the need for cabs, and go 1 hour early to high-interest sessions that could be crowded/full.

Second: .tv was one of the sponsors for the Mashable House event on Sunday March 13th/Monday March 14th and we had a blast! Our booth received a ton of visitors from folks hoping to win prizes, people wanting to know more about .tv, and existing .tv registrants who wanted to say hi and tell us about their site. Chris Hardwick (of ‘Nerdist’ fame and an all-around-awesome guy) acted as our guest video host and interviewer and he did a fantastic job interviewing a bunch of folks.  There are a ton of videos up now, and I’m sure there will be more coming soon.

Third: There’s a loooong list of people I need to thank, so let me get started now.  Again, disclaimer: if I miss anyone, my apologies – there were a ton of people who made SxSW such an unforgettable and great time and I owe them all my gratitude.

  • All the .tv registrants who stopped by to say hello or shoot interviews with Chris – I want to give a special shout-out to Steve Garfield for rocking his “I <3 .tv” shirt during the SxSW sessions.
  • The Moniker/Snapnames folks for hanging out with us at Mashable House, and for all their support around the Moniker .tv promotion and the Snapnames .tv auction. The auction ended today, so I’ll try to post more details about it later this week.
  • Romany Malco, a very talented actor who you have seen in ‘Weeds’, ‘No Ordinary Family’, ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’, ‘The Love Guru’, and lots of other TV shows and movies.  Romany was hosting the Mashable House Facebook Live interviews and he stopped by to talk to Chris and hang out with the .tv folks.
  • Pete Cashmore, CEO of Mashable, for graciously letting me steal him away from his party for a quick interview about Mashable.tv.
  • Chris Hardwick , for hosting the shindig & interviews – and for reminiscing about “getting killed so hard” in House of 1,000 Corpses.
  • All the Geek Games competitors – it was for a great cause, and even though the .tv team got knocked out in the ‘Elite Eight’ round, we hold no grudges.

In the interest of time (and not boring you to tears) I’ll wrap up most post now by sharing with you all a video of yours truly being interviewed briefly outside Mashable House. Plus, I need to go book my hotel for SxSW 2012. Hopefully I’ll see you there!
