Erin recently launched designformankind.tv where she will feature a variety of video segments on design and will delve into the nitty-gritty renovation of a fixer-upper that her and her husband have been chronicling additionally for HGTV.com. Erin got her start incorporating video into her blog a couple of years ago by creating the web series Dialogue, a program discussing the realistic side of design from her circle of connoisseurs.

Erin writes for a variety of publications including ReadyMade Magazine and her blog has been featured in the London Times, Apartment Therapy, Dwell, Glamour, and The Huffington Post, just to name a few. How long have you been a design blogger?

I’ve kept a blog religiously since 2001, but released the design portion of my musings in early 2007. Three years later, I’m still unearthing design-driven treasures from every corner of the internet!

How have readers reacted to your video snippets of design inspiration and insight that you post?

It’s funny; it wasn’t until I released video portions of my site that my readers really felt comfortable coming to me for questions/advice/guidance. I suppose there’s something entirely personable about sharing your life on camera, and my readers really relate to that. In fact, “Dialogue” has been on hiatus for nearly a year and I still get at least three emails a day asking when the series will be returning!

How did your video series “Dialogue” originate on Design for Mankind?

I had just moved to a small Midwestern town and was feeling really isolated. I searched for a resource that could connect artisans/designers to open up a conversation about things in a creative and inspiring forum. I couldn’t find what I was looking for, so I decided I’d start that sort of forum myself!

Do you think bloggers will incorporate more video into their work in the future?

Absolutely! I feel that bloggers are already so transparent with their lives, and being in front of the camera is just an extension of that. I’ve always had a voyeuristic streak in me, so I can only hope my blogger friends are comfortable sharing filmed aspects of their life. The more, the merrier!

What have you learned from posting video on your home renovation for HGTV.com?

Oh dear. I’m learning that my husband hates editing my mistakes (and there are so many!). Ha. Because he has a film background and I certainly don’t, he’s often correcting my “umms” and “buts.” On the other hand, I’ve learned so much about editing, staging, and lighting. It’s all such an exciting industry and I’m looking forward to utilizing my knowledge in fun new ways!

What can we expect from DesignForMankind.tv in the future?

For now, I’m taking things one step at a time. You can expect complete random sneak peeks into the life of a daily design blogger—you’ll find things aren’t nearly as glamorous as they seem!
