Gawker Communications seems to like stirring up controversy. But even its detractors recognize that “Gawker chief Nick Denton, [is] one of the shrewdest people in the online universe” Well, we here at .tv feel it’s pretty shrewd of Gawker to join a long list of companies adding .tv sites to their online portfolio. .com and .tv can live very nicely together. By rolling their .tv traffic to their older .com site, they can aggregate their pageviews for reporting purposes. But, with the specific Gawker.tv address, they can brand and send that traffic directly to a video specific site. The best of both worlds for them.

When it was announced today, here’s what Gawker is quoted as saying on the topic of their new site.

“How many times have you been lost on one of these sites for hours and yet feel you haven’t really watched anything good at all? Gawker.TV filters through the clutter to dish out the best 10-15 posts per day of music, movies, viral sensations and more. With user video submissions mixed with original cuts, Gawker.TV gives instant gratification to the video-centric world.”

Also, if you are worried there will be no more videos for Gawker, Blakeley had this to say:

“The Gawker video department will continue to run as it always has, there will always be videos on gawker.com, ours will just be less newsy and less sophisticated ”
